Hello from Earth2Tech

So we’re all aware that green-focused web sites are getting about as trendy as celebutante DUIs. There’s been more than enough great new reads launched in the last few months, most of them focused on helping consumers live more ecofriendly lives – something we could all do a little better. But about 6 months ago GigaTeam started to wonder if there wasn’t a need for a blog focused on the intersections between the tech industry, the business of green, and startups that will use technology and innovation to combat climate change.

So we envisioned our site this way: One part clean tech startup coverage – (a quick look at clean tech venture numbers shows the growing ranks of startups in hot areas like solar and biofuels); One part reviews of tech giant’s eco-initiatives (is Google’s carbon neutral initiative more marketing or responsible plan?); One part a resource page for entrepreneurs and Valley types looking for green tech [tools, rules, tips] – LBS meets ethanol?

It took a bit to convince Om to go GigaGreen – read his rendition here. But if investors and founders like Sunil Paul, and the oft-quoted John Doerr, and Vinod Khosla, are all aiming at energy over IT and the web, then he felt we’re in pretty good company. It might be a bubble, even mainstream pubs like NPR and the Economist are now debating that fact. We’re agnostic. As always, through bubble or boom we’ll keep the same GigaOM skepticism on this new site.

So welcome to Earth2Tech.com – our eye on the clean tech startups and founders that are using technology and innovation to help us work on the global warming mess. The name means to convey a wake up call to readers—and a nod to Liz for the moniker. Expect the whole GigaTeam to contribute, with the recent addition of Adena DeMonte, who covered clean tech for Red Herring and has joined us specifically to write for Earth2Tech. We’re really excited to launch and hope you enjoy our coverage. Let us know what works and what doesn’t and especially what you’d like to read that we and others aren’t offering you.

Congrats on going GigaGreen! Might I say though that I think you should name the blog that? Sweet name… more memorable, especially to existing Omaholics.

I work at an electrical contractor and recently started a blog (www.kitestringandkey.com) on similar topics. My intent is to share a perspective of working at a more traditional energy construction company going through hyper-growth and trying to determine our “fit” in the new “green” and efficiency-conscious world.

I look forward to reading your site and contributing if possible.

You should run a piece on EEE Energy Effiicient Ethernet. It would be a great bridge across GigaOM and Earth2Tech.

Another good one would be a list of CEO’s that print out (or have their assistants) print out ALL of their emails. Would be great to know!!!

Best wishes with the new site! Look forward to following your coverage of these important issues.

Molly Holtman said on July 16th, 2007 at 1:33 pm

Victor, Im going to start on that list of offending CEOs right now – best idea I ever heard!

Katie Fehrenbacher said on July 16th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

Great idea guys! One piece that could inspire some discussion, not to mention an opportunity for some GigaSkepticism is the testing of green innovations in developing economies, arguably one of the best markets for acceptance of these types of products.

Would have thought that a “green” natured blog would use a dark background considering end users draw more energy rendering white pixels opposed to dark ones.

Just a thought.

You folks should run a piece on PristinePlanet.com, which is a top-notch green directory and also a relatively new startup. I saw them featured in an article in the green/clean tech startup magazine “In Business” a while back. PP’s concept makes a lot of sense — allowing people to vote green with their dollars.

This is a great blog topic, and I will definitely check back often. I think it is important that every business find a way to give back to others.

As far as green technology goes I think it will be more and more important. Check out this photo documentary at ForeignPolicy.com about our trashed computer hardware.

This looks like an worthwhile topic for more exploration. I’ll add you to my blogroll.

I’d be interested to see material on tracking personal impacts (eg, carbon footprint, water usage, energy inventories, etc.) as well as introductions to communities where like-minded people gather — like the community at tree hugger.

Best of luck,
