Blackle is BS, says Google

There’s been a lot of hype about the energy-saving powers of Blackle, the all-black site based on Google’s (GOOG) search engine. The site is not, however, affiliated with Google and in fact Bill Weihl, Google’s so-called green energy czar basically shoots holes in Blackle’s raison d’etre:

We applaud the spirit of the idea, but our own analysis as well as that of others shows that making the Google homepage black will not reduce energy consumption. To the contrary, on flat-panel monitors (already estimated to be 75% of the market), displaying black may actually increase energy usage. Detailed results from a new study confirm this — Bill Weihl, Green Energy Czar, Google.

Check out the detailed study Weihl is referring to. Blackle’s Web site says it was made by Heap Media “to remind us all of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy.” How about the need to get a lot of PR?

  • plete, his official title on his business card is Google’s Director of Energy Strategy, but he calls himself Green Energy Czar in his blog post. Hey, whatever he wants.

  • This kind of reminds me of how hoaxers always win because the time wasted telling “two friends” about the latest faux news is dwarfed by the subsequent time wasted researching and de-bunking it back upstream. I believe the CO2, sulphur & nitrogen we’ve emitted testing, de-bunking, and commenting on blackle has probably far exceeded what would have been saved even if the claims had been true.

And, yes, I’m apparently now part of the problem too.

  • Blackle’s claims to save energy, while admirable, fall a little short when you look at the facts.

I propose a different approach to reduce display power consumption, spend less time using the monitor by using a more efficient Google search. How?

I have created several Google Custom Search Engines using Google Topic driven search technology and a search engine linking method to combine my multiple search engines.

I have created a more efficient mechanism for searching using Google topics and categories in my Google Custom Search Engines to group search results.

Entering an initial search string in the search box and hitting the search button displays a list of topics below the search box. When you select a topic my search combines the previous search string with the search string I have placed inside the topic.

It works quite well and reduces the time you spend running searches.

I have three main custom search engines that I have created. The Plasma TV Custom Search makes extensive use of topics.

    Music Custom Search: http://www.webperc.com/tab-hut.htm
    Google Search: http://www.webper.com/google-search

Take a look and let me know what you think.

  • This is in response to the recent posts on blackle which got under my skin a) because it isn’t really agreed on that it works and b) he’s actually making money from it, but it goes into his own pockets!!!

Since it is is common knowledge that black pages in general don’t do anything productive, I would suggest regrowgle.com as an alternative.

I know it’s not the answer to everything, but unlike blackle etc who are making money from uneducated searchers, regrowgle.com re-invests any profit back into environmental schemes in a bid to try and offset a small part of your web use.

  • Yes, there are several things going on with blackle, but people tend to forget that there is more need of user interactivity then the stupid blackle itself.
Now the age is of VIDEOS users are not going to shift from google to blackle just like that. There is a site named http://www.yaarii.com that gives the option to search videos as well as as the regular web search. I think I would bookmark this site , because it gives the option to see any video in the same page without moving your ass!

  • Sites like these are hardly credible to the educated person. It seems to me that people are just trying to combine two increasingly popular trends to turn a profit – being green and using Google. There are much better ways to save the environment out there than changing the colors on your computer.

  • Blackle is pure blaxploitation, just like those films my cousin Rufus Griffin used to star in; like “Blackdraft”, “Caddyblack”, “Black to the Future”, and “Black Kramer vs Kramer”.

  • There are around 22 different versions of “black google” online. The best one I’ve found is http://www.cleanblack.com. Cleanblack is the only version that allows you to change the text colors of the google search results. Try it yourself by going to http://www.cleanblack.com/theme/

  • The best site out there for this is called Vimle. The white version is at vimle.com and is best for people who prefer white, or use a newer LCD monitor. The black version is at b.vimle.com and is best for people who prefer black, or use an older CRT monitor to save energy. Vimle is as small as possible, conserving time/space/bandwidth and energy.

  • This all is crazy! What good are these black search engines doing but making a profit? I found this site http://www.TheEcoKey.com testing it out but looks good. Apparently they pick up trash while you search…?
