Chevron Promotes Petroleum . . . with Clean Energy Game
If you’ve been scratching your head over oil companies’ green PR attempts, there’s a new goodie coming up: Chevron (CVX) is due to unveil its latest eco PR effort, and this time it amounts to an earth-friendly-version of SimCity. We were recently emailed a link to preview it, and while interactive games aimed at promoting energy education already exist, we couldn’t resist getting a glimpse of how an oil company would use a game to promote clean energy. The company will officially launch the free, online game on Sept. 5.
“Welcome to Energyville” reads the game’s intro. The year is 2007, and it’s up to the player to allocate funds to energy-generation plants, ranging from traditional coal to biomass, solar, and wind. The goal? Build an energy economy that keeps the city powered through 2030, without destroying the environment — or the municipal budget. The game tries to highlight the complexities of being “prosperous and secure” while also “living in a clean environment.”

We named our city “Earth2Tech City” and, with a slight eye roll, prepped for play. To Chevron’s credit, it turns out that the game, which was done in collaboration with The Economist Group, is an easy-to-use and well-designed educational tool that provides an overview of the clean and unclean ways we can power our cities in the coming decade, all while looking at economic viability and safety challenges along the way.
In addition to laying out the challenges and opportunities for different types of power generation, our city (which, graphics-wise, looks more like a suburb that popped up in the middle of nowhere, with a lone car driving around its deserted streets) also has little clickable info boxes on its various buildings that detail how much power each type of energy-hogging facility needs, from commercial buildings to transportation. When that need is met, the info box gets a check mark, and the player can pat his or herself on the back for a job well done.
Thanks to in-game stats by the analyst and research firm Economist Intelligence Unit, we were inundated with stats at every turn while we drag-and-dropped various types of energy-generating plants into our miniature city.
In the end, though, after we decorated the screen with solar, hydro, and wind plants, we forgot to include one thing: petroleum. And Chevron didn’t want us to forget that! We got a warning message: “Earth2Tech City needs petroleum.” The company clearly wants to make sure we know that petroleum-based fuels will remain necessary well into the future, even though alternative fuels need to be part of the picture. Very true, though we’re not sure why we had to play an entire game to figure that one out.
Click back on this post on Sept. 5, and we’ll add a link to the game if you want to check it out.

Can someone email me, and let me know if the $350,000 cash prize is legit?
Hi, i’ve recived an e -mail of yours telling that i’m a winner of certain amount of money and i’d like to know if is it truth. the e-mail was sent it from mr_ali_yusuf63@yahoo.com.hk.
thanks for your attention.
yea i got 1 saying I won 7.5 mil dollars. I dunno if its scam or not
I received an sms saying I won R755 000,from chevron petroleum bonanza,so i must call to claim, foolishly i believed it,and he’s been asking for money to process my winnings, which I sent, but he keeps asking for more and now i’m not so sure.Is this winning thing legit?
My wife recieved an email saying she won$900,000.Now it’s saying to send money to claim it this is a fraud is it not.
i received an SMS telling me I have won R755 000 on 2008/08/14. Contact details on the message (cell-numbers) are always on voice mail. What is going on?
well I also got an email stated I won $US750.000. When I search the internet for onlinebonanza. chevron oil I found out that it was a scam.So do not be fooled by the Nigerian scamers who use the internet to steal money from people.
I received an SMS on 2008/09/10 telling me I have won R755000.
Looks like a scam to me.
hi guys ,irecieved the same e-mail about and asking me about info,is this really scam ?
my daughter received sms stating you have won R755 000. i phoned and was told to deposit the amount of R1750 into an FNB account in the name of SM SELEBE. lucky for me i search the website just in time to read about this scam. the sms said to call “william smit” to claim your prize. according to the person i spoke to, the amount of R1750 was to register in order to get your prize on the same day he also suggested that i make use of Shoprite Moneymarket to pay the money and this will insure that i get the winning money on the same day. my husband has reported this to our local SAPS who will investigate this matter, because they are also aware of this scam, atleast now they have a bank account number and name to investigate.
To people who fooled by this scamers. There are no lottery price if you know you don’t know any,..they are just using people to get money…We are all educated here.We know that people are fooling us. So please try to think before believing in there foolishness.
I got the message for $900,000. Sure would like the money, but there does not seem to be enough info there to safely claim it. Some grammatical/spacing errors, too. The number starts with a “CT”. . . name has no title like manager or anything like that. Here’s what I was sent:

I recieved two emails like this, both from different email addresses
Watch out for lottery scams. If you receive an email from a lottery you did not enter, it is a scam.
In most cases the email accounts in the email are free email accounts and the phone number is a mobile phone.
NEVER send any money to the criminals behind these scams. If you do, they will just invent a new fee you have to pay, and if you pay that, they invent a new fee, etc etc until you give up or run out of money.
Yesterday I received this emial…. similar to another one above

I got the same e-mail Saturday, I did work on the Bonanza A and B at Dynamic ind. in New Iberia La.
I was really happy in see that I won 7,500,000.00 usd.
But from what I have seen about Chevron personal e-mail, you can only contact them through Chevron e-mail. I am now currently working on the NEMBA project and have a lot of Chevron personal that don’t know anything about this lottery.
So please don’t send any money to people that you don’t know in Africa.
hello i got an email saying i was selected by email and won a million dollars sounds like a scam to me but feel free to contact me through my email and let me know thank you.
Guess what people, I got a message just like all of you got. Mine was for the 7,500,000 variety. I sent a couple message asking for some kind of varification, proof, or something to show they were with Cevron Oil. Guess what? I haven’t recieved anything back fro them. This is a scam, no doubt. I get one from somebody new almost every day. Like the saying goes…”if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is”.
u better go to hell, Mr. Ali!… your promo is a big scam….
don’t be fooled, fellas!
Look I got one also— so if all of us are winners it must be a scam ;cause we all can’t be winners!!
