I guess a big question is whether VCs are embracing cleantech because they think there is money to be made with the technology, or whether they are investing because they think there is money to be made from downstream investors that are more easily duped into thinking such technologies can make money.

In the short-term, I guess I don't care where the venture capitalist's heart is (assuming he or she has one) if they're throwing billions of dollars at green industries.
However, long-term this is not so good, for if the winds of potential profit change, green venture capital will disappear faster than Arctic ice.
I suppose we consumers must keep investors convinced that we are longing to embrace more environmentally sound products and services.
By the way, the only tree a typical venture capitalist cares to hug is one of those on which money grows.
