&lt;p&gt;Code efficiency reduced to kWh? Let&#039;s not miss the big point.  If 200 searches saves me a trip to a retailer that is out of stock for an item - maybe I&#039;m carbon neutral.  If it takes fewer than 200 searches - I think the carbon balance favors the use of a search, even an &quot;inefficient&quot; one.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;A better idea - why don&#039;t the coders just turn off their machines at lunch and go for a walk in the real world.   KwH prices rising (tax it, if needed) will drive better IT and other use of power.&lt;/p&gt;
