Investing in Green Poopy-Pants

Written by Craig Rubens

gdiaperGreen rugrats everywhere will be happy to learn that gDiapers, maker of environmentally sound diapers, has partnered with 2x Consumer Products Growth Partners in a Series B round of fundraising. 2x Consumer joins angel investor group Golden Seeds, as well as original investor and manufacturer Principal Business Enterprises. Who knew it took so many investors to change a diaper?

Portland, Ore.-based gDiapers makes diapers that have reusable outer “pants” and a disposable, biodegradable, flushable absorbent insert — check out their comprehensive demonstration videos (SFW, but they’re exactly what you expect). The core, which retails for about $3.25, is made of fluffed wood pulp and sodium polyacrylate, a super absorbent crystal able to hold 100 times its weight in water and found in most disposable diapers. The diapers are Cradle to Cradle certified and have even been plugged by green celebrity mother Julia Roberts.

I thought diapers had been green for a long time… I of course am referring to the color, not the pro-environmental buzz word du jour. Fantastic stuff, but what about their comparative affordability?
