Green energy is definitely the best solution in most cases. Technology like solar energy, wind power, fuel cells, zaps electric vehicles, EV hybrids, etc have come so far recently. Green energy even costs way less than oil and gas in many cases.

Jim,
I suggest you go to Shai Agassi's Project Better Place and watch the webcast. This man has grand plans and the potential to significantly change the way we see electric cars.

Yes, PHEV's will take care of the daily commute for a lot of people but Project Better Place aims to open up all car based travel to electric cars by providing all the infrastructure required for long range driving. I'll certainly be watching with interest.
Luke

PHEVs can provide 90% of the benefits of all-electric vehicles at less than half the additional cost. And with no range limitations.

Even Tesla realizes the problems with battery pack swapping. Ugh! Think of the material moving equipment needed to install and remove packs weighing hundreds of pounds. The storage. Ugh! Ugh!

PHEVs can charge up at home or at work using a conventional outlet in about 3-5 hours. No additional infrastructure needed!

Hmm, maybe they aren't actually proposing battery pack swapping. But then I don't understand what this infrastructure is then. Why is a station needed? Why can't they augment a parking lot or something?
