Green energy is definitely the best solution in most cases. Technology like solar energy, wind power, fuel cells, zaps electric vehicles, EV hybrids, etc have come so far recently. Green energy even costs way less than oil and gas in many cases.

The predictions contain at least one clear problem. If transmission line capacity is falling short, this is good news for solar PV. Solar PV, installed on existing urban infrastrucutre, and producing electricity during times when transmission lines are at peak capacity, does not require new long distance transmission lines. Solar PV is not located far away and over treacherous terrain. Solar PV in San Francisco would reduce the need to build new transmission lines up the peninsula. Solar PV in San Diego reduces the need to build transmission lines over sensitive desert.

I think 2008 will also be the year that water issues, and the need for advanced technologies (treatment, distribution, analysis), will get much more attention. These issues will be US based (i.e. southeast water drought early in 2007) as well as international (such as water infrastructure demands in the Dubai, UAE).
