I think wind mills are a viable addition to the grid providing the grid has enough conventional fueled generation as spinning reserve to fill in the periods when the widn does not blow. What do you do if 10% of your power comes from wind mills and the wind slows or stops? What is going to make up that shortfall? If you can't make it up from another source and quickly, the whole grid could crash. There is one major fact of life you are ignoring. There isn't a utility in the country that has enough spinning reserve to pick up 10% of their load factor should the need arise.

Green energy is definitely the best solution in most cases. Technology like solar energy, wind power, fuel cells, zaps electric vehicles, EV hybrids, etc have come so far recently. Green energy even costs way less than oil and gas in many cases.
