I wonder where did Shay Agassi get his talent for the colossal capability for misleading people. He keeps hinting that his electric cars will somehow annihilate our dependence on oil imports. Nothing is further from the truth; the batteries have to be charged, with electricity coming from conventional power plants! Stating that only green energy will be used for charging the batteries is another instance of plain hype.

As transition devices I would offer two suggestions:

The carburetor on the internal combustion engine will vaporize gasoline, butane, CNG, and LNG with equal efficiency.

Electric wheel motors can be installed at the local garage. A controller and a couple of batteries -the motors don't care what kind- can be thrown into the trunk.

When your batteries run out, 10 miles, 50 miles, who cares, you flip a switch and change to a different fuel. Better a 1000 garages in a 1000 towns building a 1000 cars, than 1 company in 1 town building a million.
