As a member of the OpenSG group that is mentioned in the article, eMeter has favored open standards and interoperability for a long time. In fact, back in 2007, we developed a joint proposal with PG&E for an "Automated Data Exchange" interface, that was adopted by the California PUC.

Although a common interface is a good goal, for the time being while standards are implemented, eMeter has developed the capability in all our software to support multiple flexible interfaces for all technology involved. This ensures that utilities can select whatever smart meter technologies they want and still be able to integrate the data with their existing IT systems. Standards will make this even easier in the future, but a strategic and flexible approach - like that which PG&E is pursuing - accounts for the market transition that will necessarily take time.

Additionally, we have leveraged 10 years of back-end utility experience to launch Energy Engage, a consumer web engagement tool for utilities. Energy Engage goes beyond basic web presentation and incorporates behavioral science, pro-active alerts, and easy-to-use interface that enable the consumer to be an active manager of his or her energy-use.
